An army of witches, a feminist alternate history
Aired on Freeform, Motherland: Fort Salem rests on a bold alternate history: the witches of Salem, instead of being persecuted, struck a deal with the state — three centuries later, they and they alone make up the United States army. The series follows three young recruits, Raelle, Tally and Abigail, through their military training at Fort Salem.
Exclusively female power, a hierarchy led by General Alder, lesbian love stories treated as perfectly ordinary: across three seasons the series built a deeply feminist and inclusive universe, carried by a fervent fan community that fought for its proper ending.
In 2023, those fans, voting online, awarded it the “Femina Series & Mini-Series” trophy of the World Women Heroes Awards — for a series where women's power is not an exception but the order of the world.
