The first woman at the controls of the TARDIS
On 16 July 2017, an announcement travelled around the world: after twelve male incarnations and more than half a century on air, the Doctor of Doctor Who — television's longest-running science-fiction series — would be a woman. Jodie Whittaker, acclaimed in Broadchurch, rose to the challenge with an enthusiastic, generous, luminous Thirteenth Doctor.
Beyond the symbol, her tenure at the controls of the TARDIS (2017-2022) opened the door for millions of little girls who can now dream of being a Time Lord. The actress carried that responsibility with panache, speaking up for equal pay and for women in historically male roles.
In 2021, fans around the world, voting online, awarded her the “Science Fiction” trophy of the World Women Heroes Awards — for the woman who proved that the time of heroines had come.
